Ethos Argument

Does playing football make you violent?                 by Gavin Miller

American Football is an american classic that has been around since the late 1800's and finally making a name for itself in the 1920's. Since the 1920's the game has changed in many ways with rules changing and even the uniform making numerous changes over the years. However, what many people don't know is that some of the changes in football have left multiple football players with gruesome injuries and in most cases now, injury to the brain. Unfortunately because of these injuries in the brain, football players have been shown to change emotion and become violent due to head to head helmet hits. Helmet to helmet injuries not only affect a player but can affect those around them because of how violent the player can get. It seems as those this trend of players getting concussions will continue to rise.

Image result for cte football brain injury chart According to Julie Beck, author at "The Atlantic", researchers at Boston University studied multiple brains of former football players (165) and found that "They found evidence of  CTE in 131 of them-79 percent".(Beck) Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), is a "degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others" according to the Concussion Foundation.(Concussion Foundation) It's crazy to believe that such a disease was able to ruin the lives of not only many football players but military veterans, and the fact that it was up to 79 percent. This convincing evidence alone shows why american football needs more rules put in place surrounding helmet to helmet hits because the current rules only give players small fines. In the end more players are continuously showing that these injuries do in fact make you violent and it's sad that these injuries have to happen.
